I have read - and do believe - that it is always best to be kind to the wee folk. While I believe they are very real, I haven't always believed that way. Therefore, let me share with you my experience:
Years ago, after reading a particular book in which the author insisted that faeries were real, I decided to try to find out for myself.
It was a cool autumn night and I lived in a small cottage hidden in the woods. My little cat had not come home and I was scared that she might have met with an accident. It was not like her to be gone so long and I was worried for her safety.
I walked outside and stood in the yard. I made an announcement to any faeries who might be listening, telling them that I was seeking to find out if they were real. If they were, I asked them to please show me by bringing my little cat home.
I went back inside the house for my wind-up alarm clock and took it with me back outside. I stood again in the dark yard, this time holding up my alarm clock. I asked the faeries to please bring her home within the next 15 minutes if they were real and truly did exist.
I noted the time out loud....and then stood there, waiting, listening.
About 13 minutes later I heard the sound of an animal running hard. My little cat came rushing down the hill through the woods as if a whole herd of banshees were after her. She raced past me and practically flew into the house as she leaped through an open window, landing in my kitchen.
I had my answer. I thanked them and have never doubted their existence since.
