He always went by the name of William Jarvis, but always admitted that this was not his real name. He never revealed what it was. He was probably illegitimate. He said he was born in Aberdeen .. and we calculate 29 February 1840 - as close to death in 1920 he said " had had only 20 Birth Days in his life". Vague family stories about him being educated in England. He said he joined the Royal Navy at Woolwich in 1859; served on the "Termagant" guarding the British Consul during the "American War"; ending in New Zealand in the Maori Wars. Said he took part in the Gate Pa siege. N.Z. records show the name he went by, William Jarvis, was that of a fellow seaman who was wounded and died in June 1864. He jumped ship in Port Adelaide in 1865, married, and had 14 children and a very happy life. But who was he ???
