Hello Andrew...I am married into the Steward family and my husband is a direct descendant of Captain Gabriel Steward (died 1745) and Gabriel Steward Esq through the John Charles Tucker Steward line. Would love some more information about the family if you have any especially on Captain Steward who was the Captain of the Winchester for the East India Company, in particular about St Helena.
Hello Karen, Thank you for your message. I too descend from the same line, which makes your husband probably about my fourth or fifth cousin.

Hello Karen, Thank you for your message. I too descend from the same line, which makes your husband probably about my fourth or fifth cousin.
My maternal grandmother was the grand-daughter of John Charles Tucker Steward, and Eliza his wife. Her name was Lucretia Dorothy O'Bryen Steward, and became Davies when she married my grandfather in 1921.
Captain Gabriel Steward (1731-1792) was Member of Parliament for Weymouth. He was born in St Helena. I have a miniature portrait of him. I have to say that they had quite a poor reputation as a family for several generations, having estates in the Caribbean that were very resistant to the changes in legislation about slavery! I think it was three generations served as MP for Weymouth, and that fact too was not devoid of scandal!!
At the moment I cannot tell you very much about the St Helena connection, except, with extraordinary serendipity, the brother-in-law of the earlier John Charles Tucker Steward (1775-1845), who lived in Wem, Shropshire, served in the army on St Helena as part of the guard on Napoleon, who died there in 1821. He wrote a very interesting letter to JCT Steward describing Napoleon's death, which was in the possession of my mother (but she sold it years ago). I do have a copy of it.
I would be very interested to know more about the more recent forebears of your husband, as they become more difficult to trace as the tree spreads....
Hello Andrew, sorry it has taken some time to get back to you. This all started from a piece of silver made n 1764 that we own (obviously passed down) as it has a crest on it (Stewart Clan) so I wanted to find the Scottish connection, in other words which part of the Stewart clan he is descended fro...

So, Herbert Francis Steward is my husband's great uncle as he was the brother of my husbands grandfather Ralph Oliver Steward who lived in Ceylon until he moved to Australia in the early 1900's. There is the sisters Mabel who married John Bamforth, Dorothy Lillian who married Walter Cox and Constance who I can't find anything on at the moment. Their younger brother is Harold North, LT in 6th King Edward's Own Cavalry promoted to Captain and attached to the Royal Flying Corp 53rd Sqn died Dec 3 1916 in an air crash at Catterick buried in Petersfield Cemetery Hampshire.
I don't know if you have gone back further on Gabriel (born 1731) but his father was also named Gabriel and he worked with the East India Company and captained the India and Winchester. When he was captain of the Winchester he took Robert Clive to India (later known as Clive of India). Gabriel (1731) was also a captain of EIC ship Neptune before becoming MP and was Governor of Portland Castle. Gabriel's (1731) daughter Sarah married Col Browne and had a son named Thomas who later became Sir Thomas Gore Browne was Governor of St Helena, then 4th Governor of NZ, 2nd Governor of Tasmania and then Administrator of Bermuda.
My husband's father's name is Herbert Louis Steward and he married Lillian Mollison He served in the Australian Army during WWII and was part of the battle in Bardia the first battle Australians were in then he fought in the first battle for Torbruk, went to Greece and was captured and became a POW in several camps. My husband's name is Herbert Ralph but we call him Ralph.
I know this is quite a bit of information, but if you have an email I can send you what I have found.
