Silver Pocketwatch of Sir Alexander Jardine?
At ScotClans we often get quite unusual emails. The other week I got one from someone who was asking if we could help her find out about a solid silver hunter pocket watch which thanks to it's inscription looked like it had important Jardine connections. I couldn't really help apart from forwarding her email onto the Clan Jardine Society. I felt it was important to document this watch in case it's sold on and disappears. It may be of interest to the Jardines as it could be a part of their familly history.
The watch was bought from an auction a few years ago while researching it's history they came across Sir William Murray Jardine. (The current Chief of Clan Jardine). It belonged to Sir Alexander Jardine who was Sir William Murray's GGGG GrandFather.
It has been in-graved and says:
Given to Alexander Jardine by his mother 10th Feb 1841 died 14th Jan 1893. Given to Lindsay by her father 1892 given to Douglas by his fiance 15th October 1898. On the outside of the case the in-graving says Cave Adsum with an engraved five pointed star underneath. Then, the words engraved Quod Dixi Dixi with an engraved, what appears to be lion rampant.
On checking these dates she have found that they match perfectly to Sir Alexanders DOB and Death which are 10th Feb 1829- 14th Jan 1893. They have also found out the Lindsay on the watch was Margaret Linsay Jardine, his daughter. She then gave this to Sir George Douglas Dixie who became her husband and was the last, but one of the Dixie Baronets.
The watch itself is 179 years old as it was made in Edinburgh in 1839 by the date stamp on the silver hallmarks the maker's name is Robert Bryson and Sons.
All of this they have found out from the engraving on the watch.
