Clan Broun

The surname in its more common variation of Brown is a very common name and would normally refer to the colour.

The name’s connection with the Celts may possibly be derived from ‘brehon’ a name for a judge in ancient Celtic society.

Early records of the name in Scotland come from 1128 when Sir David Le Brun was witness to the foundations of Holyrood Abbey where he was a benefactor. Early Brouns claimed to have descended from French royalty, their coat of arms incorporating three gold lilies.

Through marriage the Brouns became connected to large and powerful families such as the Hays, settling around Haddington.

In 1686 Patrick Broun of Coulston was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia. A title which has passed through the family to the present day.
