(of that Ilk, Lanarkshire) The Cleland family arms are derived from the office they held of hereditary foresters to the Earls of Douglass. In heraldry, the hare is rarely seen. It appears in the Coat of Arms of Cleland as a hare salient argent with a hunting horn around its neck. Above the hare is a falcon standing on a left handed (sinister) glove resting on face armor. The ancient family motto for this distinguished name is “Non Sibi” – meaning “Not for Himself”.

JAMES McCLELLAND was born at Ayr on 18th January, 1799, and was educated at the Academy there. He came to Glasgow in 1815, and after serving nine years in the office of Mr. James Kerr, accountant, he began business on his own account in March, 1824. For nearly fifty years thereafter Mr. McClelland was a very considerable force in the city of Glasgow.

One of the oldest items in the Cameronian collection, this banner was carried in the Covenanter’s army by William Cleland at the Battles of Drumclog and Bothwell Brig in 1679. Cleland was then scarcely eighteen years of age, fighting at Drumclog as an Officer of Foot and at Bothwell Brig as Captain. Made of blue silk, the banner is inscribed at the top with gilded Hebrew characters, which read ‘Jehovah-Nissi’ (The Lord is my Banner). The banner takes its name from the phrase at the bottom , written in blood red, which reads ‘No Quarters for Ye Active Enemies of Ye Covenant’. Colonel Cleland gave the banner and his sword to his friend Henry Hall of Haughhead at an unknown date, to prevent them falling into the hands of the enemy. The items were passed down the generations to several zealous Covenanters until they reached the hands of the Raeburn Family from East Lothian, and were discovered by a Mr James Drummond around 1850. The banner eventually came into the possession of the regiment at a later date.
