The name is common in Wigtownshire and Dumfriesshire and originates in one the places named Crosbie/Corsbie in Ayr, Kirkcudbright or Berwick.

Iuone de Crosseby witnessed a charter by Robert de Bruys to Arbroath Abbey (1178-80). He also witnessed an agreement regarding lands in Annandale, and the gift of the church of Moffet to the church of Glasgow.
