The 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn in 2014 will be a key event in the Homecoming Scotland programme and a centrepiece of the Stirling 2014 celebrations for the Year.

The National Trust for Scotland’s Battle of Bannockburn 2014 event will take place during the weekend of 28-30 June 2014 and will include:-

• an exciting battle re-enactment, the largest ever hosted at the memorial battlefield;
• a tented clan village;
• weaponry displays;
• falconry displays;
• an authentic campsite and much more

Following consultation at the recent Stone Mountain Highland Games in Atlanta, USA, the Homecoming Scotland Team will be working hard to incorporate a clan parade as part of the planned programme of activities.

Work is underway with partners, including the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs (SCSC) and the Council of Scottish Clans and Associations (COSCA) to develop the programme further. Stirling Council has also signalled its strong support for the Bannockburn 700 plans and the Homecoming Year.

In addition to the Bannockburn re-enactment weekend, the Homecoming Team will also be working with the Scottish Highland Games Association to help them to use the year to support and extend the appeal of Highland Games to reach and engage clan homelands across the whole of Scotland.

The Convenor of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor said: ‘We are delighted to be included in what will undoubtedly be an outstanding re-enactment of the Battle of Bannockburn. Although some clans existed at the time of Bannockburn, it was during this period that many of the clans we know today became established. So the event is important to us. We hope that thousands of Scots, both here and overseas, will get behind the weekend and return to their roots to help us remember what was a pivotal period of our history. Discussions are also underway with regards to the staging a 2nd clan convention. This will provide an opportunity for clan leaders from around the world to work together to establish the strategic direction of the clan network into the future.’

The President of the Council of Scottish Clans and Associations, Susan McIntosh said, ‘This is welcome clarification of what is being proposed for 2014 and we welcome the opportunity to work with the Homecoming 2014 Team to ensure that plans for the Battle of Bannockburn 2014 event are developed with a clan audience in mind.’
