Scotland's Tartan Day Festival 2014
April 6 - Scotland's Tartan Day
Tartan Day marks the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 at Arbroath Abbey. This historical occasion sowed the seeds of modern day democracy and was used as a basis for the American Declaration of Independence. Tartan Day was inspired by this historical occasion to celebrate all that is good about Scotland - its people, its heritage, its history, its culture and its amazing legacy to the world.
The Tartan Day Scotland Festival takes place at the beginning of April each year. The Festival is a programme of very special events which commemorate all that is best about Scotland and the Scots, home and away. Find out more about why we celebrate Tartan Day, read about famous Scots and keep up-to-date on news stories from around the world.
One day is simply not enough time for this, so celebrations will run from 5 - 13 April 2014, with a fantastic Homecoming event in Arbroath over the weekend 5-6 April which will bring the past to life and celebrate the rich heritage of the town.
On 5 April, there will be events at Arbraoth Abbey, along the historic High Street and at the Harbour, followed by a family history event, a pipe band parade and a re-enactment of the signing of the Declaration at Arbroath Abbey on 6 April.
From 7-13 April, Tartan Day will be celebrated throughout the rest of Angus with a great programme of local events and activities across the country. There will be something for everyone during the Tartan Day Scotland Festival 2014.
