Held by the MacKays and then by the Grays after 1544. The Marquis of Montrose was imprisoned here after being betrayed at Ardvreck Castle. Robert Gray was fined after his wife, Jean Seton, hit one of Montrose's guards with a leg of meat. The old castle was reputedly haunted by the ghost of a young woman murdered here, and the apparition os a dishevelled young woman has been seen in the castle. A skeleton was later found behind a wall and, when it was buried, the hauntings stopped. The property passed through other hands to Andrew Carnegie in 1895, and he rebuilt the mansion. The castle is now an exclusive country club.
