Lord Thomas Babington MacAulay (1800-59)
Born in Leicestershire, his essays for the “Edinburgh Review” on Milton and James Mill brought him acceptance into the wealthy circles of London.

He became an Edinburgh MP in 1829. In the House of Commons his eloquence was admired and persuasive, such as when speaking on the Reform Bill of 1832.

For financial reasons he suspended his parliamentary career for a highly-paid post in Calcutta’s Indian Supreme Council.  In 1848 he published volumes I and II of his “History of England”. They were highly acclaimed and greatly purchased, as were volumes III and IV, which were published in 1855.

In 1948 he was made Rector of Glasgow University. His death was the result of heart disease.
