It is a restored L-plan tower house with a large runs tower a one corner, and is dated 1596. The MacNaughtons were Royalists and fought in the ill-prepared and unsuccessful rising of 1653 against the Cromwellian occupation. Iain, the last MacNaughton holder, intend to wed the younger daughter of Sir James Campbell of Ardkinglas, but after some trickery found himself married to the wrong woman. After fleeing to Ireland with his love, the younger daughter, Dunderave passed to the Campbells, probably around 1689. Iain had been a Jacobite and had fought at Killiecrankie, which may have been reason enough not to stay. The castle became ruinous but was restored in 1911-12 for the Noble family, and it is still occupied. The MacNaghtens of MacNaghten flourished and the line continues, although they apparently live at Dunderarve in Antrim in Northern ireland.
