I had no idea what that really meant but carried on proudly as a Graham. I had always thought the Grahams were from England but in reality, they were actually from Scotland. the issue I always had was that no member of my family could tell me anything more than just the name. A name is just a name unless you know more about where the name came from and who were the ancestral people who carried that name generations before me. And so the journey begins.
What I have determined through my research is that I am a descendant of the Grahams of Montrose. Here is just a partial list of my Graham ancestors:
• Sir Robert James Stuart Graham, 10th Bt.
• Sir Stuart Graham of Montrose, 11th Bt.;
• Sir Montrose Stuart Graham, 12th Bt.;
• James Graham, 1st Duke of Montrose and Lady Christian Carnegie - Wife with children: David Graham, 1st Earl Graham, and William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose,
• Captain George Graham;
• William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose;
• James Graham, 4th Duke of Montrose;
• Douglas Beresford Malise Ronald Graham, 5th Duke of Montrose;
•James Graham, 6th Duke of Montrose;
• James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose;
• James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose.
George Edward Graham; Helen Elizabeth Graham; Jessie Louise Graham; Mildred Jane Elizabeth Graham; Percival Harris Graham; Robert Vernon Graham.
These are still just names to me now but with further research, I will find out more and how they all connect.
