In 1372 he was appointed King’s Lieutenant and Justiciar and in 1383 was made Earl of Buchan on his marriage to Euphemia Countess of Ross. Alexander deserted his wife for Mairead inghean Eachann with whom he had a large family. He held large territories in the north of Scotland before eventually losing a large part of them. Alexander is remembered for his sacking of the royal burgh of Elgin and its cathedral. His nickname was earned due to his notorious cruelty and rapacity but there is no proof that it was used during his lifetime.View Less
