A fine large L-plan tower house, dating form the sixteenth century and now ruinous, although complete to the wall head. The MacLellans were made Lords Kirkcudbright in 1633, and one of the family fought at the Battle of Philiphaugh in 1645. They abandoned the castle around 1752 because of financial troubles, and it was sold to the Maxwells of Orchardton, and then to the Douglas Earl of Selkirk in 1782. It was soon ruinous and is now in the care of Historic Scotland.View Less
