Malcolm Buchanan
James Graham (1799-1874) the 4th Duke of Montrose commissioned William Burn in 1854 to build Buchanan Castle after the original nearby Auld House, seat of the Clan Buchanan, burned down in 1852. The Castle was never a great house of the Buchanans.

I think the old castle was also called Buchanan Pele. As you say the Buchanans no longer owned the land by the time the castle was built. As a side note the gardens around the castle were designed by Capability Brown the famous garden designer
