An altered L-plan tower house, part of which may date from the fourteenth century. the property was held by the Thorntons but passed by marriage to the Strachans in 1309. The Strachans were appointed to act against Jesuits and seminary priests in 1590, but Strachan of Thornton had to pay 10,000 marks to keep the peace with Sir Robert Arbuthnott during a feud in 1616. Sir Alexander Strachan of Thornton was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1625.View Less
