I have been searching for some years to find information on George Bruce b. abt. 1750 who is a direct ancestor. George was married to Margaret Balmain, the half sister of William Balmain who came to Australia with the first fleet and became chief surgeon of the Colony of New South Wales. The earliest mention we can find for George is in the Will of William Balmain who leaves a legacy to his "sister Margaret, wife of George Bruce, residing near Perth". One of their sons David who married Margaret Robertson and some of their sons were Professor Alexander Balmain Bruce D.D. 1831-1899. a Scottish Theologian, teacher and writer; Professor James Bruce D.D., a teacher who worked for many years in India, and Rev. Dr. David Bruce 1824-1911, who was moderater of the Presbyterian Church in both New Zealand and Australia - and our great grandfather. There are many wonderful stories in the lives of the descendants of George Bruce and Margaret Balmain but George remains a mystery man.
