BRIGADOON
“WE’RE SIMPLY THE BEST”
Congratulations to the Brigadoon gathering, we full of praise for our all the very hard working terrific volunteers who persevered under adverse conditions to ensure that Brigadoon was a success, the weather played a major part in disrupting what was to be a great day out
Mother Nature gave us a rough deal with the weather, again! damp, dreary and dismal, constant drizzle with the occasional glimpse of sunlight, but that didn’t deter the stalwarts that visit Brigadoon, they came, not as many as we would have liked but sufficient to say that it was again another great day for Brigadoon. Once again I believe that the weather conditions on the coast stopped many people making the trip and coming along for the day.
Bundanoon once again wakened to the sound of the pipes wafting across the a very misty town you could almost imagine that you had been spirited back to the Highlands of Scotland (it rains there too) to that mythical village of Brigadoon and as usual all roads lead to Bundanoon.
Clans and Scottish societies continue their annual pilgrimage to our gathering to meet up with family and friends, a true gathering of the Clans, it just goes to show the magical appeal Brigadoon.
Outstanding highland entertainment
Once again Highlander Celtic Rock Band from Newcastle performed, they were excellent as usual, this is Celtic music at its very best. It is a show not to be missed;
A newcomer to Brigadoon is Mary Kiani, Scots lass now residing in Sydney, she gave us a real taste of Scottish singing at its very best, I do believe she had them singing in the rain, and we sincerely hope that Mary will return next year to entertain us
Also new to Brigadoon is Danelaw Medieval re-enactment group, the group specialises and focuses on exploring the arms, armour and combat from the early dark ages through to the renaissance period.
The street parade was a procession of bands playing such a broad variety of music that really entertained the spectators lining the street, accompanied by the various children’s floats, the RFS and of course the proud Clan and Scottish societies marching in their groups
As usual we had a magnificent display of traditional pipe band music. There were 20 bands in total, over 450 performers, what a great turnout for the gathering; we really appreciate the time and effort put in by those bands that make the effort to attend Brigadoon to entertain us
The Scottish Country and Highland Dancers both groups gave wonderful displays of their own kind of dance to very appreciative audience and the infamous Dashing White Sergeant where all can participate was a wonderful spectacle.
However the best was yet to come, at the closing ceremony the audience were treated to an outstanding massed band display, an advance in full strength all 20 bands at once was a sight to behold. The lone piper was William Withers from Bowral from the Parramatta RSL Caledonia Pipe Band
To the massed pipes and drums CONGRATULATIONS, their discipline shone through in the closing ceremony, the rain came down but they performed to the highest possible standard, a superb 20 minute performance in awful conditions
Lee Mitchell from Bullaburra in the Blue Mountains was crowned for the 9th time Male Grand Champion, and in the Ladies event Carma Burchell from Bowral was crowned Female Heavy Weight Grand Champions
The Tartan Warriors are celebrating 23 years of continual participation at Brigadoon, this is an outstanding achievement and the Brigadoon committee would like to express their deep appreciation and congratulate David the his Warriors for their continual support at Bundanoon
What an event, absolutely nail biting finish, the first four Warriors all managed to lift four stones but then along came the youngest of the Warriors, Jordan Steffans, he flew down the course lifting all 5 stones in 35 seconds, it’s not very often that we get this calibre of competition A terrific event and a great win by Jordan, back to back champion
However a sad day for Brigadoon David Huxley who has been involved with the Warriors since 1991 announced his retirement from managing the group, his expertise and great love for the event will be sadly missed, however all is not lost Craig Reid a 5 times Champion of the Stones, is taking over so the Warriors continue. We wish David all the best in his future endeavours and he’ll be a welcome visitor anytime at Brigadoon
Check out our Facebook page it’s full of photographs and video’s from the day, and while your there why not tick the “like’ button https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bundanoon-Highland-Gathering-Inc/165873971047
The Brigadoon committee is a highly motivated volunteer group that delights in being able to produce a world class Scottish gathering and to see visitors enjoy a day of Scottish revelry is the best satisfaction that we can have.
Well done everyone, and Haste you back for 2015

Saturday 5 April 2014
It is with great pleasure that the Bundanoon Highland Gathering Committee announce their Chieftain for the 37th gathering is Valerie Cairney-Editor and Publisher of the Scottish Banner newspaper
Valerie Cairney is pleased to be returning to the 2014 Bundanoon Highland Gathering, an event she calls “one of the most special Scottish events in the world”. Valerie will be travelling with her husband Jeff Moore (Clan Morrison, USA) from Florida, USA to be a part of Bundanoon is Brigadoon. Valerie is also looking forward to joining her son Sean (the Australasian editor of the Scottish Banner) at this year’s Gathering, who will be at the Scottish Banner tent throughout the day.
This year marks thirty-eight years since Valerie launched the Scottish Banner newspaper, then a publication for the local Toronto Scottish market in Canada. Today the Scottish Banner has readers across the world with its major distribution in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and the USA. The Scottish Banner has been printing each month in Australia for nearly twenty years and is available in all states and territories.
Through the Scottish Banner Valerie has met a wonderful array of people from across the world, from royalty to celebrities, however it is the regular members of the Scottish community which inspires her most. The countless volunteers for events such as the Bundanoon Highland Gathering, the dedication of pipers, drummers and dancers, and Clan members who help those looking to trace their roots and more.
The Scottish Banner was launched at the Fergus Highland Games and Scottish Festival just outside Toronto in 1976, this event is much like the Bundanoon Highland Gathering, an event which has grown into a major event on the local calendar and has promoted Scotland to generations of Scots and their descendants.
For nearly forty years Valerie has attended Scottish events and festivals across the world and knows what an important part they play in nurturing Scottish identity internationally. Bundanoon Highland Gathering has remained one of her favourite Scottish events since she first attended in the 1990’s.
On Valerie’s last visit to the Bundanoon Highland Gathering she was recognised by the Celtic Council of Australia and was awarded the Celtic Honour Cyfaill y Celtiad (C y C) (Welsh-Friend of the Celts) for service to the Celtic community, Valerie is also a past recipient of the Flora MacDonald Award in the USA for services to the Scottish community.
Whilst it’s a long trip from Florida to Australia, Valerie is looking forward to meeting as many Australian Scots as possible on her third visit to the Gathering and is greatly honoured to be asked to be the Chieftain of the Day.
2014 is Scotland’s Year of the Homecoming, and for Valerie coming back to Bundanoon is Brigadoon will no doubt feel she too has come home. Please make sure you say hello or as she may prefer “G’day Val”.

In the hidden mists of the New South Wales Southern Highlands lies the village of Bundanoon, home to the traditional Scottish Highland Games. For the past 34 years, Bundanoon has gained the envious reputation throughout Australia for hosting “Bundanoon is Brigadoon”, the gathering held “Always in April” with a following of 10 – 12000 visitors “and you don’t have to be of Scottish descent “to come and enjoy and participate in the day.
“Brigadoon” begins at first light with the haunting sound of Bagpipes drifting across the village in anticipation of a day of traditional Scottish celebrations. While locals and guest’s alike lie safe and snug in their beds they awake to the sound of the bagpipes echoing hauntingly, while the village of Bundanoon is magically transformed into the mystical “Brigadoon”.
This annual event began in 1978, its principle aim to raise funds for local charities and bring tourists to Bundanoon in particular and the Southern Highlands in general thereby benefiting local businesses, guesthouses and hotels. Continuing to this day, “Bundanoon is Brigadoon” has become one of the most successful events staged in the area. From its humble beginnings of a handful of pipe bands and spectators, and is recognised worldwide as the day has grown to into one of the finest Highland Gatherings in Australia,
Bundanoon is a comfortable 2 hour drive from Sydney and Canberra and the South Coast, which makes it the ideal location for travellers who just want to pop in for the day or for others who wish to stay and enjoy “Brigadoon” and the hospitality and culture of the Southern Highlands. With such an influx of people coming into the area, local businesses and the hospitality trade in particular have thrived to the point where there is hardly a room available anywhere and in most cases all accommodation is booked a year in advance.
“Bundanoon is Brigadoon” is a non-profit making, registered charity event that readily distributes the funds from the day to local charities and groups that assist the organisers in the administration of the gathering. The committee of the Bundanoon Highland Gathering ensures that it recognises the commitment of those local charities and groups who give countless hours of labour to the gathering by disbursing monies raised on the day on a proportional basis to each organisation.
All roads lead to Bundanoon or so it would seem as the village waits in anticipation as cars, coaches, bikes bring the thriving throng of spectators prepared for a day of highland festivities.
The Street Parade starts at 9.30am and features some 20 Pipe Bands from all over the state accompanied by a large variety of decorated floats and marching Clan Societies. The parade makes their way one kilometre to the Bundanoon Oval accompanied by the crowds of spectators numbering in the thousands.
The Opening Ceremony begins at 10.30am on the Oval and the Gathering is officially opened by the Chieftain of the Day.
Spectators are then treated to a spectacular Massed Pipes and Drums display of highland music, with up to 600 Bandsmen participating. The sheer pageantry of the display has to be seen to be appreciated; the magic of the occasion leaves one breathless. The swirling of a myriad of coloured tartans and music stirs the heart and makes you proud to wear the Kilt of your ancestors
At the Oval there are over 120 specialist stalls, selling everything Scottish, from pies & shortbread to Clan memorabilia & souvenirs, with copious amounts of food promoting every nationality, even the Scots favourite “Haggis”
All are made most welcome at the gathering and encouraged to participate in the “Traditional” and not so “traditional” games. This as “The Ideal Family Friendly Day Outing” and you don’t even have to be Scottish to enjoy the day.
The committee recognises and encourages mass participation by spectators and especially the children. Spectators can try their luck at “Tossing the Caber”, “Shot Putt”, Kilted Races”, “Egg Throwing” and Water Toss. There is also a Bonny Bairns highland dress competition for all the proud parents.
Throughout the day one can enjoy Highland and Scottish Country dance demonstrations, and for those who like to try something new you are cordially invited to join in. There are 30 Scottish Clans and Societies tents that have their own area where many make their way to enquire about their Scottish heritage and ancestry.
During the day at irregular intervals the Pipe Bands entertain the crowds with their own individual styles of music and display marching. This being a non-competitive gathering the bands can relax and really enjoy themselves without the added pressure of being held under the spotlight of judges.
One of the main events of the day is the display of strength by David Huxley, Australia’s world heavy events champion and his Tartan Warriors. These giants of men compete in a competition to lift the “Bundanoon Stones of Manhood”; there are 5 stones of incredible weight ranging from 100 to 165 kilograms. This really is a wonderful contest of speed, agility and strength.
As the day of festivities comes to an end and the closing ceremony approaches, the crowd are once again treated to the spectacle of the Massed Pipes and Drums display which is followed by the lone piper and a closing address by the Chieftain.
Those diehard fanatics who wish to continue on in the Scottish mood can join in the “Official” Brigadoon Ceilidh(Scottish Knees-up) held at the Bundanoon Soldiers Memorial Hall. Bookings are essential and can be made on 61 2 2443 6033. or email: ferndale79@bigpond.com
