I was recently researching Civil War records and stumbled into muster rolls for Alabama 31st Infantry. There was GGG grandpa James Marion Maxwell. He fought at the Siege of Vicksburg. The siege lasted 45 days when the citizen's reached starving they decided to surrender. I have a copy of his parole from Vicksburg. In a photo I found he's wearing his P.O.W. Medal.
Another little odd thing my GGG uncle Ham on my Mom's side was also a POW at Vicksburg "Stars of Equality" Farmerville, LA. His brother, my GGG grandpa raised this unit and was the first Captain before stepping down to run recruitment in the Parish.
I find it so fascinating that my ancestors crossed paths a century before my parents meet.
