Thats What Made Canada

Lord Elgin tells the story of two large stones (sometimes called rocks) thrown at James Bruce when he was Governor General in Canada, 1848-54.
Canada was still a British colony. Times were unsettled. The elected parliament passed a bill to compensate all those who had suffered losses during an earlier rebellion. Wealthy merchants, the privileged elite opposed the bill. When the Governor General Elgin gave Royal Assent making the bill law, riots ensued. In spite of opposition, Elgin supported the vote of the elected representatives of the people, a significant step on the path to Confederation and to Canada becoming a fully independent democracy.
